We Gather Together was written to celebrate a Dutch victory over the Spanish when Prince Maurice of Orange defeated a Spanish Cavalry force under Count Jean de Rie de Varas at the Battle of Turnhouton on January 24, 1597.

We gather together to ask the Lord’s blessing;
He chastens and hastens His will to make known.
The wicked oppressing now cease from distressing.
