Story behind the song
I've read the Raven by Edgar Allen Poe once too often and decided to write a song based on his poem.
Lyrics
Outside and around me, It hangs in the air. Below and beneath me, is fear and despair. Memories of loved ones lost long ago, Still haunt my dreams as if to show That in life, nothing's certain in future or past I see this with sorrow finally, at last. Knocking and tapping Stir me awake I call out "who's there?" No one answers, I shake. The silence is eerie To the door I make way Broken by tapping The silence fades away Who can this be? At an hour this late? Why must they come now? Why can it not wait? In flies a shadow Astonished, I peer At a slick, Nightly raven I'm struck down with fear What's the meaning of this? I simply must know What name has this creature? Why will he not go? What's your name, oh stately raven? How come you're so bold? Pallid bird of the night, with a stare oh so cold. These questions I had, for the answers I searched. With a flirt and a flutter, the raven just perched. With only one word Did this raven reply A word without meaning Was it a lie? Nevermore Nevermore This ominous creature Spoke this one word so clear I stood there in wonder Disbelieving my ears I pull up a seat My mind finally at ease Like friends long before you I fear you will leave Nevermore Nevermore A chill crossed my body, the air grew thick and reeked Of memories from my past and the answers I seek. Prophetic in his croaking, could he have known The sorrow and fear I carry all alone? Angel or demon, why must you torment me Your word's pierced my being, my anger you'll see! Here in my sorrow I lie tired and weak Yet the raven remains My heart pierced by his beak At last I take comfort In this moment I see What cannot be changed Must simply just be Memories forgotten Must always carry on To guide and to aid Until we are gone Nevermore will I dwell On sorrow and pain Nevermore will I lament I have nothing to gain Nevermore
